29 Jun Rolex Oyster Commando
The Rolex Oyster Commando is a very rare and particular watch.
This watch is part of a very limited series of watches made by Rolex for the American market at the end of the 1960’s. These rare models were sold by the retailer “Abercrombie & Fitch” an American fashion house, founded on 4 June 1892 by David T. Abercrombie. Note the “Abercrombie & Fitch” print advert of that era.
In this vintage advertisement we can read :
AberCrombie nominates the timeliness of Rolex Commando. All those great Rolex features are here in this handsome, waterproof watch. The famed “Swimpruf Oyster”… the case carved from a solid block of stainless steel and guaranteed pressure-proof to a depth of 165feet. 17-jewel Swiss movement: black dial with radiant markers and hands. Swedish stainless steel band.
One example was sold at Christie’s in 2008 for 22’500 Swiss Francs. It certainly is a sought-after timepiece for important watch collectors from all over the world.
The Rolex “Commando” is published in the books Rolex Encyclopedia and it also appear in the cover of one of our most prestigious editions: Rolex Story
