Rolex Submariner ref. 16808 comes from a legendary, unique story. The Rolex Submariner represents the world’s most famous diver watch and in 1979 Rolex launches the first Submariner Date with sapphire crystal, with ref. 16800 in stainless steel and ref. 16808 in gold.

ROLEX SUBMARINER REF. 16808: TWO REFERENCES, SAME LEGEND

These two references have the quick date change, which is carried out by unscrewing the crown and, after having extracted it to the first click, rotating the crown counter-clockwise. The Submariner Date in stainless steel will remain in production until 1988, whilst the gold model until 1987.

The references 16800 and 16808 have 16800 hallmarked inside the case back and bear the caliber 3035.

In the ref. 16808 bezels are unidirectional: they rotate only counter-clockwise to give additional security.

The reference 16808, the Submariner Date in 18 carat yellow gold, was made in two versions: black dial and bezel or blue dial and bezel.

Remaining in production until 1987, this watch bears a caliber 3035 and has the ref. 16800 engraved on the gold case back and 16808 between the lugs, at 12 o¹clock.

In a 1986 Rolex catalogue we can read the main features of this reference:

“Oyster Perpetual Date SUBMARINER, 18 ct gold chronometer. Fliplock bracelet. Graduated rotating bezel for checking decompression time spans. Special Oyster case with crown guards to the Triplock winding crown. Waterproof to 300m. Selfwinding. Sapphire crystal.”
